Junior Chess
Never too young!
Despite the presence of online gaming, over the board chess has never been more popular among young people. It has been shown to improve concentration, calculation, planning and resilience beyond the game itself. So impressive are the advantages in playing chess that several countries, including Spain, have now made it part of the school curriculum. We're not there yet in the UK, but in Portishead from September we are introducing chess clubs into several local schools!
Portishead Chess Club has it's own Junior Club meeting from 6pm to 7pm each Friday (check our calendar to ensure we will be open)! There are only two chess clubs in the South-West (12 nationally) that have been accepted onto the ECF Junior Development Pathway - and one is Portishead!
The children can play for fun, play in tournaments, play against other junior teams, receive individual and group tuition, attend chess camps and much more!
... and thanks to Portishead Town Council - it's FREE!!
