So last night the A Team's opponents pulled out due to lack of players (!) - "Should've gone to Portishead!" - so we chalked up a 6-0 win by default.
Things were a whole lot harder for the B Team who were up a strong Downend side. I have only seen two games and don't know what happened in the other two. On Board Two, Curtis playing the white side of a Botvinnik System, pounced on an error by his opponent to gain a material advantage. Unfortunately, an oversight/miscalculation soon after handed the advantage back and left him a pawn down with a worse position. Curtis, however, played actively on the queenside causing his opponent to bale out with a draw.
On board three, SJ played her favourite French Defence against which her opponent played a tricky gambit line in the Tarrasch System. SJ gobbled up a couple of pawns and it was questionable as to whether her opponent had sufficient compensation. The position, however, was very sharp and the position swung one way and then the other and in the end a draw was a fair result.
With losses on the other two boards the final result was 3-1 to Downend.
