National Schools Chess Tournament Report

Following on from the amazing results on the 3rd of March for the Under-9 and Under-11 teams, the next round focused on senior schools—specifically the Year 7 and 8 section.

This event took place on Monday, the 10th of March, and was split into two sections:

1. The Challengers – For children competing in the tournament for the first time.

2. The Qualifiers – For schools that had already been competing in team matches throughout the season.

The Qualifier Section

In the Qualifier Section, 16 schools took part, with the top two teams earning a place in the National Finals in Nottingham this June. These teams had already played competitive matches throughout the season.

• Bristol Grammar School A Team finished first and will advance to the finals.

• QEH A Team also qualified for the finals.

A fantastic achievement for Portishead Chess Club, as two of our players were in the QEH A Team:

• Hugo (Board 2) scored 3.5 out of 4 points—an incredible performance.

• Mark (Board 4) scored 2.5 out of 4 points, also contributing greatly.

The Challengers Section

In the Challengers Section, two more of our club’s players, Cinar and Elliot, led Backwell School to victory, winning 4 out of 4 matches and securing first place.

This means that four children from Portishead Chess Club played in the top two teams of both the Qualifiers and the Challengers, an outstanding achievement! This follows on from the fantastic results of our Under-9 and Under-11 teams last week.

We couldn’t be more proud of these children—well done to everyone involved!
